Local Anesthetic Local Anesthetic smooch 018 (2008, CD)
Local Anesthetic Local Anesthetic was the name of the record label run by Wax Trax Records co-owner Duane Davis in the early 80s. It was the only independent label in Denver of the era that released more than one title and thankfully for us, Mr Davis has pretty good taste. It was not simply a punk label, but a reflection of some of the better bands of the era & also friends (and employees) of Wax Trax. The first single released featured Allen Ginsberg reciting poetry for the vocals of the A-side. The second single was by Your Funeral, who were a a goth-garage pop-rock band. But in the early 80s, Denver was home to some hardcore bands that were on par with any other hardcore band of the era. Bum Kon and White Trash proved to play as fast & loud as any of the touring bands. Frantix paved the way for the kids of Bum Kon & White Trash before later morphing into the Fluid. Young Weasels predate the hardcore scene and for lack of better words, sound a little new-wave, but a little on the dark side (the A-side, 'Twist & Burn) and also poppy (the B-side, 'Happy Feathers'). Jeri Rossi of Your Funeral recorded perhaps my personal favorite single of the lot with her song, 'I Left My Heart But I Don't Know Where.' When I first heard it as a teenager it reminded me of a Teenage Lydia Lunch. This CD compiles all of those singles, all that were ever released by Local Anesthetic, but also includes 3 early Colorado punk singles. The Defex single is pure '77 punk and both sides should be considered classic punk songs. But the only folks that know it have to pay hundreds on eBay, until now of course. The Nails 'Cops Are Punks' is a catchy number, also from '77. First dubbed the Ravers, the band changed their name at the time of the single was originally released so this single can be found under 2 different  names. The Nails went on to have a hit with '88 Lines About 44 Women' after relocating to NYC. The Rok Tots single is probably the most rockin' of the bunch and the band still exists today. These singles are part of punk rock history but this chapter is usually missing from all the books. This CD contains all songs from the singles, including Frantix songs that did not make it to their CD release on Afterburn, and a different mix of the Bum Kon single than that of the upcoming Bum Kon release.

Smooch Records Smooch Sampler smooch 015 (2006, CD)
Smooch Sampler This compilation was made to promote the past and future releases on Smooch and mostly sent to press, radio, and record stores. I've decided to list here as a release mostly because of my fascination with numbers and because Smooch 1 & 5 are compilations and Smooch 20 will be a compilation. This was made at the time of 15th release on the label so I decided to number it as such. Almost every 5...

This is a free release, by request only, subject to availability.

"When it comes to gloomy bands from Denver, Smooch Records has got the entire game on lock. This haunting compilation showcases tracks by Andrew Douglas Rothbard (Slaves, Pleasure Forever), Jay Munly and the Lee Lewis Harlots, and 16 Horsepower amongst others. This is post-goth history from the mile high city." --xlr8r

Various Artists Radio 1190, Local Shakedown Vol. 2 smooch 005 (2004, 2 CD set)
press
Radio 1190, Local Shakedown Vol. 2 Volume two in the Local Shakedown series. This compilation marks the fifth year anniversary of Radio 1190. I think this CD set shows the change in both the music scene in CO over five years, as well as the changes at Radio 1190. In many cases with the bands, there isn't much change-but that's not bad. There are a few genres of music on this compilation that are not featured on volume one. Most of these songs are exclusive to this compilation but quite a few are available on other albums. Personally, I'm quite happy that this release documents both the first recording and performance of Coast Ghost. I'd also like to thank Jello Biafra for not complaining to me for naming both of his contributions to each Local Shakedown compilation. And of course a thanks for being part of each album.

David Edwards of 16 Horsepower and Kal Calhoone of Tarantella both provide vocals. Ordy and Rumley from Slim Cessna's Auto Club make up the rhythm section. Sparkles All The Kids Are Gonna Fuck You Up smooch 003 (2001, 7" EP)
All the Kids Are Gonna Fuck You Up This is the first recording and release from the band. Much like the band, this release sparkles. It is pressed on clear vinyl with red and silver glitter mixed and melted into the wax. Only 500 copies were pressed and most are hand numbered in ink that also sparkles. The recording was lo-fi and noisy to begin with and then it somehow sounded more messed up after being mastered. Then it lost even more sound quality when cut to vinyl and then the layer of glitter made things even more fucked up.
